Hiking The Narrows, Zion

Day 14 – The Narrows

The Narrows is an intense hike, mostly IN the water, through the slot canyons formed by the Virgin River.  We had received advice from our fellow campers that “the best money they ever spent was on the special footwear and hiking stick” for this hike.  They were right!

Necessary footwear
We entered The Narrows with hundreds of other would-be hikers, many of whom were barefoot, wearing flip-flops or other assorted shoes.  With the cold water and challenging rocks, they quicky dwindled.  This was, without a doubt, the best hike of our trip.
Even though it was another 100 degree day, the temps in the canyon topped out at 85 and the water was a cool 60.  We hiked in and out of shadows and up the canyon about 2 miles to a fork.  Most people either turned back at this point or continued up the main channel to “Wall Street,” sheer rock walls about 1500 feet high.

We took the path less traveled (mainly to avoid the crowd) up Orderville Canyon, and we were so happy we did.  This spur had the high, sheer walls too, but also included hanging gardens, a number of waterfalls that we got to climb, and some deep pools for swimming – hiking through water up to our necks on occasion.

The Corkscrew Falls presented the final obstacle that the guys were able to conquer. They had to pull themselves up a 15-foot waterfall with a rope and a helping hand from a friendly boy scout troop.  On the way back, we did venture all the way through Wall Street before heading the four miles downstream on pretty wobbly legs.  7 and ½ hours later, we returned our gear and collapsed.

We will sleep well tonight!
