Day 5&6 Officially RVing

Day 5 Custer State Park, SD (Black Hills)
Today was wildlife day!  We saw many herds of buffalo (which did make some tasty short ribs and filet mignon last night!), several EXTREMELY close up.  It is definitely springtime as most of them were shedding their winter coats and there were lots of adorable babies. They seemed completely oblivious to cars or people.  One group was just wandering through a campground.  Pronghorn deer (aka antelope) roamed the range as well, but they are mostly solitary creatures, it seems.  We also saw a wild turkey, a wild burro and a prairie dog village – fun to watch them scamper about.  We took a gravel road “shortcut” and stumbled into a US Army training activity. Oops.

After a hike and some “bouldering” we made our way to Denver where we spent the night with our old friends, the Higgins.

A side note, we have discovered that there is a HUGE biker subculture across America.  They are very patriotic and travel in groups.  Custer, SD apparently hosts a rally called Sturgis that makes Sandusky’s look puny. I recommend buying stock in Harley Davidson!

Day 6 (RV! Denver - Cody, WY)

Now we are official: we picked up our RV and headed to Wyoming.  We had the pleasure of driving through Wind River Canyon Indian Reservation -- simply beautiful scenery.  The ultimate indoctrination came with pulling in to the Walmart parking lot where we “camped” for the night (along with about 20 other RVers) and stocked up on supplies.  Yellowstone, here we come!
